Your WA Basic Food Shopping Guide

๐Ÿ“ฃ Checkout Update: As of June 22nd, 2026, a federal court blocked the planned ban for snacks and drinks. Bottom line: You can still buy candy and soda with your Basic Food card. We are keeping an eye on this and will update this guide immediately if the rules change again.

Question goes here?

โœ… Good to Go!

This is a Staple Food. Stores are federally required to stock more of these items. You are good to go!

โš ๏ธ Harder to Find

This is an Accessory Food. You can still buy this with Basic Food! However, small corner stores are no longer required to stock it, so it might be harder to find.

๐Ÿ›‘ Pending Restriction

Currently allowed, but if Washington passes Senate Bill 6186, this item will be blocked at the cash register.

โŒ Not Eligible

Federal law prohibits using Basic Food for hot prepared foods, pet food, vitamins, alcohol, or paper goods.

Note: A federal exception for hot rotisserie chickens is pending. We will update this tool if it passes!

Checkout Scripts

If the register denies an item, don't panic! Use these scripts to tell the cashier how you want to handle it.

1. The Mixed Basket (To buy it anyway)

"It looks like my EBT won't cover this specific item. Can we process a 'mixed basket' so I can pay for this one item separately with cash or debit?"

2. The Void (To remove it completely)

"It looks like this item is restricted under the new rules. Can you please void this from the transaction? I will just take the rest of my approved groceries."

3. The Clarification (If you suspect a glitch)

"I know the store systems are updating right now. Can we double-check if this is coming up as a restricted 'MAHA' item, or just a glitch? If it's restricted, I will just leave it behind."
